Although we are all busy looking to the future, inward investment and development within the county, it is important to acknowledge the heritage of Britain's largest county and its people. The first Duke of York used the white rose in 1340 and there is a reference to "tyke" being used as a nickname for a yorkshireman as far back as 1700.
The City of York is home to the largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe and England's oldest inn, the Bingley Arms in Bardsey, dates back to AD905.
A county that produces so many diverse and interesting people from artisits, writers, retail entrepreneurs to Prime Ministers is indeed rich in heritage and culture, and is rightly proud of its achievements.
